Matt & Ben

comedy by Mindy Kaling

and Brenda Withers

directed by Emily Clark

August 4th - August 14th, 2016
Matt and Ben by Mindy Kaling and Brenda Withers and directed by Emily Clark is an ingenious, outrageous, and silly fantasy of how the young Matt Damon and Ben Affleck came to write the brilliant script for the film Good Will Hunting. Spoiler alert: it fell from the ceiling into Affleck’s apartment while the boys were pounding out a hopeless film version of J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye.

Beneath the silliness, this play addresses the nature of friendship, inspiration, creativity, and fate. Damon and Affleck are played here by two women—Erin Hoffman and Shannon Bowen—and much of the comedy plays with popular stereotypes of Damon and Affleck’s personalities.

Damon is the serious artist, Affleck the slacker coasting on his good looks and charisma. The sudden appearance of the life-changing script fuels dreams of stardom for Ben, and moral anxiety for Matt. What have they done to deserve this gift? What will be consequences if they claim credit for it?

The dilemma challenges their lifelong friendship in ways that cast a hilarious light upon our celebrity culture and the price of pursuing fame at any cost.
